Of course, I could just not have another dull subject. I had to make it a little special - as you do!
... and with the support of my students, friends, colleagues and industry....

"Industry, Awards and Research Night 2007, 2008 and 2009"

Final year research projects in Property, Construction and Project Management 2007 (70 students), 2008 (110 students) and 2009 (210 students).

In 2007 the installation took place at one of Melbourne's most emblematic buildings "Federation Square", more specifically at the BMW Edge space which is an amazing "steel and glass box" with a non-lineal structure which resembles a messed-up honeycomb pattern. The building is sitting by the Yarra river which is Melbourne's backbone. Fed Sq complex is literally placed over the numerous rail-tracks coming of Flinders railway station (east side). The complex was designed by LAB Architects and built by Multiplex. It suffered of massive costs overruns but the end result has been highly successful creating a public, cultural, culinary and retail space for CBD Melbourne. Its spatial and architectural qualities are also highly innovative. LAB response to this site was that of the "anti-icon" perhaps as a response to the extremely easy to picture Sydney Opera House and more conventional land-marks, thus Federation Square resembles the "experiential" qualities of Melbourne built in intriguing fractal geometry. You need to live it to understand it!

In 2008 the installation was organised on the metaphor of PORTs around the globe - in specific "PIER 14s" - just as the one where we celebrated our exhibit. Below you will see a number of banners with the theme of PIER 14s across the world which I designed using images and sketches of the various places I recently visited. Va benne!

Saludos, Guillermo

2007: BMW Edge at Federation Square by the Yarra River
2008: Pier 14 at Melbourne Docklands
2009: Pier 14 at Melbourne Docklands

Melbourne Docklands. National Australian Bank - NAB HQ - building next to Pier 14. The building reassembles the concept of shipping and shipping containers. The building features large, sunny open atria in the heart of the building, a campus-style workplace space and four star energy rating. Designed by Bligh Voller Nield and built by Bovis Lend Lease Pty.

  1. What a great night it was. Can't wait for our turn!

Mind you, it was sort of awkward when the prize winner didn't attend, especially for a major award from a company. Very awkward.
