With the increased technological advancement the production of façades can be localised back to Australia at affordable cost with substantial increase in quality including aesthetic, fire safety, acoustic and thermal isolation. August was an exciting month. I much enjoyed my first visit to mainland China. Wuhan is the city I was invited to give a lecture on 'BIM in Australia'. Wuhan is a 'town' of some 10 million inhabitants (HUST University campus has 'only' 110'000 residents). Wuhan opens a complete metro line p/year. 28th of December is 'Metro Day'. Regional capital expenditure on infrastructure for Hubei Province (of 57m population) is similar to that of the UK. Manufacturing is another dominant economic activity. Climate in August is "supper" hot and humid! Food is equally hot! :) The BIM Summer School at HUST is a 5-day intensive program in which 10 scholars from around the world are invited to present their research and to showcase the state-of-the-art in BIM (architecture or infrastructure) from their home countries. Digital crafting , perhaps an oxymoron. Perhaps a new dimension in the age of the 4.0 revolution.  We, the human species, are rapidly moving into a new living reality, in which a continuum between reality and virtuality... augmented reality and simplified virtuality is a constant. With the promise of improving quality of life and liveability form providing civic spaces from leisure to increasing a sense of public safety and prosperity, a new society in tune with technology which is to better our lives. Work-life balance  is seen as the imposible dichotomy which might find a better fit under Jeremy Rifkin's Zero Marginal Cost society. Mankind has traveled from hand-craft , to tool-craft , to machine-craft to mind-craft ,  todays digital- craft  is rapidly evolving... perhaps into a data-craft  in which the challenge is on harvesting the data rather than mining it... mind the gap!   Watch this space.
